One of the most common New Year's resolutions is to begin exercising, but actually getting out to the gym is another story. However, a new app called Carrot Rewards is hoping to change that by rewarding people who meet their automatically determined step goal with points for free movies, flights and gas.
The app utilizes smartphone sensors to determine how many steps they're taken. For the first two weeks after downloading the app, the app will track steps to come up with a reasonable step goal to begin with, and then increase the goal as users hit the goal more and more. (My initial goal was 6,500, then raised to 7,400, 10,000, 12,800 and finally to 13,200 before going down to 13,100 where it's remained since). Since I've selected Scene points as my reward, everyday I reach my goal I receive four points that are deposited automatically into my account.
To earn more points, you're also able to fill out quizzes about eating healthy, the environment and financial literacy. You can also refer friends to the app and earn bonus points that way. There's also the Step Up Challenge, which challenges you to hit your goal 10 times in 14 days and rewards you with 40 bonus points if you succeed.
