One of the biggest reason for high fees is the way that the airport system is typically run in Canada โ€” the actual land that the airport is based on is federally owned land, but then the land is leased to non-profit companies. This means that the organizations have to pay back money for ground leases and rent, which added up to approximately $305 million โ€” adding up to $7 of each ticket sale in 2005, according to a document from the Calgary Airport Authority.
